The Erongo Mountains in central Namibia are of volcanic origin. The rim of a former magma bubble still rises clearly from the landscape today, enclosing a vast caldera. The region is characterized by bizarrely shaped granite formations that define its appearance. <\/p>\n
The area is one of Namibia’s most significant natural spaces. Parts of the Erongo are designated as protected areas, including the Erongo Mountain Rhino Sanctuary, which spans large areas of the caldera and its slopes. The region provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, including endangered species like the black rhino. Ondili is committed to this landscape by creating further nature reserves. At the foot of the Hohenstein lies an area of around 8,000 hectares, where Hohenstein Lodge is located, directly bordering the Rhino Sanctuary. Another area, Etemba, stretches along the northern flank of the Erongo to the Omaruru River. <\/p>\n
For thousands of years, the Erongo has also been a place of human traces. Historical San rock paintings document the long history of human settlement and underscore the special significance of this region. <\/p>\n

Wildlife populations in the wild Erongo Mountains are stable thanks to the Erongo Mountain Nature Sanctuary, a private initiative covering around 200,000 hectares. Black-faced impalas, otherwise only found in Etosha, are just as much at home here as the black rhino, which has found a protected habitat in the rugged canyons and valleys of the Erongo. Desert elephants are spotted from time to time as they follow the Omaruru River upstream on their migrations along the northern edge of the mountains. Leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas are the larger predators in the region. Various eagle and vulture species are also native to the area. <\/p>\n
The Erongo is also an excellent place for spotting special bird species. A dedicated hide has been built at Hohenstein Lodge for this purpose. In terms of tourism, the Erongo region has a lot to offer. If you don’t have to rush through all of Namibia in two weeks and can bring a little time for the regions, you can spend some fascinating days at Hohenstein Lodge in the Erongo. <\/p>\n
