Swakopmund Region

Swakopmund is located at the mouth of the Swakop River, which gives the city its name. Most of the time it is dry, with water flowing underground. During the rainy season, the water also flows above ground into the Atlantic.

The city is shaped by its history as a colonial town. Some buildings from this era have survived to this day and, within the overall picture of a lively African coastal city, appear like an unusual, almost foreign setting.

Swakopmund Region

Swakopmund Region

Located directly on the Atlantic coast, this is where the desert meets the sea. The cold Benguela Current offshore ensures an extraordinary abundance of marine life, while on land the seemingly hostile Namib spreads out – yet a closer look reveals an amazing variety of life.

The surroundings are equally diverse: long beaches and boat trips along the coast. At the same time, the dunes around Swakopmund offer space for active experiences – from quad biking to sandboarding down the steep slopes of the Namib.
