Sundowner Drives

Out in the last light of the day

In the late afternoon, you head out into the landscape in open off-road vehicles. The drives take you through the respective reserve surrounding the lodge. With a little luck, you can spot wildlife while the guide provides context on the unique features of the environment and explains the local ecosystem.

At sunset, we stop at a hand-picked location. As the sun slowly disappears behind the horizon, it creates a moment to pause and enjoy—with views across the landscape and a cool drink to round off the day.

As the light fades, the landscape visibly changes: ridges, dunes, and plains stand out more clearly, and long shadows trace their contours while the sky and earth turn warm shades of red, brown, and violet. As darkness falls, the path leads back to the lodge.

Sundowner Drive in the red dunes of the Kalahari

Between the sweeping lines of the red dunes, the landscape changes with every meter. Sand crests stretch like waves across the terrain, with flat valleys and sparse grass in between.

As the sun sinks, the sand begins to glow: first in warm orange tones, then in deep red, while the shadows trace the shapes of the dunes more sharply. The contours look almost graphic—a moment on one of the dunes with a view over the sandy landscape and a refreshing drink in hand as the last rays of sun disappear behind the horizon.

Sundowner above the treetops of Etosha

In the early evening hours, the drive takes you through the private nature reserve to a sundowner deck built on stilts that rises above the treetops.

From here, the view opens up over the surrounding landscape—and with a bit of luck, you might see wildlife appearing at this time of day. From the elevated perspective, movements are particularly easy to spot: between the dense mopane forest, on open plains, or along paths winding through the terrain.

A special place for the sunset—with a cool drink in hand and a view over the landscape as the light gains intensity one last time, bathing the surroundings in warm colors before darkness slowly takes over the scene.

Sundowner Drive Erongo

The drive begins in open savanna and leads toward the striking granite formations of the Erongo, which rise from the plain.

Along the way, you pass the so-called Boulder Forest—a collection of massive, smooth-polished boulders lying close together, giving the landscape its characteristic look. With a bit of luck, you may also see animals moving between the rocks and bushes.

Once at the viewpoint, the view opens up over the surrounding landscape. As the sun sinks, the granite peaks are bathed in gold, orange, and violet tones—a special place for the sunset.

Sundowner Drive Namib

A game drive in an open off-road vehicle leads into the Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve in the late afternoon. The route follows a dry riverbed that, when flowing, runs directly to Sossusvlei. Oryx and springbok are frequently seen, and with a bit of luck, predators as well. On a small hill fringed with red sand, we celebrate that moment of the day when the sun sets behind the dunes of Sossusvlei.

Ondili Lodges, Regions, and Experiences

Each Ondili Lodge is inextricably linked to its surroundings – and that’s precisely where the local experiences originate. What guests can do here doesn’t come from a fixed program, but from the landscape itself.

In each region, different facets of Namibia emerge: sometimes the wildlife is in the foreground, sometimes the vastness of the landscape, or exploring on foot. The lodges embrace these unique features and make them accessible – calmly, close to nature, and always in direct relation to the environment.

This creates an interplay of location, accommodation, and activity that makes each region uniquely experienceable – and invites you to discover Namibia from different perspectives.
