Damaraland Triple

Guided Tour Through the History of Damaraland – Twyfelfontein, Organ Pipes, and Burnt Mountain

Twyfelfontein is one of the most significant sites for prehistoric rock art in Africa. More than 2,000 engravings are scattered across the rock faces, depicting giraffes, elephants, rhinos, ostriches, as well as human and animal tracks. They offer a glimpse into the life and spiritual world of early hunter-gatherer communities. In 2007, Twyfelfontein became Namibia’s first site to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Just a few miles away, the rocks tell a much older story. At the Organ Pipes, closely aligned basalt columns emerge from a gorge. Their angular, almost uniform shapes look like a geological anomaly within the otherwise irregularly shaped landscape.

Burnt Mountain stands out even more distinctly from its surroundings. Between the predominant shades of sand, ochre, and brown, the almost black, vegetation-free ridge appears like a foreign body. The dark discoloration makes its surface look charred, giving the mountain its name.

Damaraland Triple – Twyfelfontein, Organ Pipes & Burnt Mountain Tour

The guided tour starts directly at Twyfelfontein Adventure Camp. The first leg leads to Twyfelfontein in one of the lodge’s vehicles. During a walking tour, individual engravings are viewed up close, and their motifs, tracks, and contexts are explained – details that easily go unnoticed among the rock faces.

Next, the tour heads to the Organ Pipes. A short walk leads down into the gorge, where the tall basalt columns emerge directly from the rock walls. Only from up close does it become clear how regularly the individual rock formations are lined up.

The tour concludes at Burnt Mountain. Its dark, almost black ridge stands out abruptly from the lighter colors of the surroundings and looks as if the surface has been scarred by fire.

With many new impressions and stories in your luggage, you’ll then head back to the camp, where there’s time again for rest and relaxation.

Ondili Lodges, Regions, and Experiences

Every Ondili lodge is inseparably linked to its surroundings – and that is exactly where the local experiences come from. What guests can do here is not determined by a fixed program, but by the landscape itself.

In each region, different facets of Namibia reveal themselves: sometimes the wildlife is in the foreground, sometimes the vastness of the landscape or exploring on foot. The lodges pick up on these special features and make them accessible – quiet, close to nature, and always in direct relation to the environment.

This creates an interplay of place, accommodation, and activity that makes each region experienceable in its own way – and invites you to discover Namibia from different perspectives.
