Namib Horse Trails

Horse Safaris in the Namib Desert

The Desert Homestead Lodge serves as the starting point for desert rides. The Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve, spanning over 1,500 km² and home to the Desert Homestead Lodge, extends from the red dunes of the Namib to the plateau mountains of the Tsaris Mountains, showcasing exceptional scenic beauty.

Rides lead across wide, open plains, past sand-fringed mountains, and through dry riverbeds. Sightings of oryx and springbok herds are very likely here, and mountain zebras are also frequently spotted. With a bit of luck, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, or even leopards might be seen.

About the Horse Trails

Around 20 horses call the Desert Homestead Lodge stables home. The Desert Riders’ Lounge complements this area as a meeting point before and after rides. The rides are accompanied by experienced guides and are individually tailored to each group. This ensures both beginners and experienced riders have a great time. All necessary riding equipment is provided by the lodge.

The Riders’ Lounge is both a meeting point and a retreat. Relax here with a cool drink before or after a ride. Guests who don't ride are also welcome.

Sundowner Ride through the Namib

Riding through the Namib in the saddle as the light slowly fades changes one’s perception of the landscape. Dune lines, flat valleys, and sandy slopes pass by in the calm rhythm of the horses, becoming more distinctly drawn with each passing minute.

At sunset, we stop at an acacia tree in a dry riverbed. Riders and horses rest while the landscape reveals itself in intense colors – sandy areas glow, contours sharpen, shadows lengthen. Enjoy a cool drink in hand, a relaxed view of the changing colors of the sunset before heading back to the lodge in the twilight.

Namib Night – Ride with an Overnight Stay in a Tent Camp

Morning Ride through the Namib

Morning Ride through the Namib

In the morning hours, the ride begins at the horse paddock. The landscape is still quiet, as the first light softly falls over sand and plains, bathing the surroundings in a clear, calm morning glow.

The path leads through the open environment, past lines in the sand and over gentle inclines. Traces of the night are still visible, initial movements emerge in the distance, and with every meter, the landscape becomes brighter and more vibrant.

Along the way, a break is taken at an elevated point. In the still cool morning air, with a cup of steaming coffee or tea in hand, the view opens up over the surrounding landscape before the ride leads back to the lodge.

Ondili Lodges, Regions, and Experiences

Each Ondili Lodge is inextricably linked to its surroundings—and that is exactly where the local experiences come from. What guests can do here isn't just based on a fixed program, but arises from the landscape itself.

Every region reveals different facets of Namibia: sometimes the focus is on the wildlife, sometimes on the vastness of the landscape or exploring on foot. The lodges embrace these unique features.

This creates an interplay of location, accommodation, and activity that makes each region uniquely experienceable – and invites you to discover Namibia from different perspectives.
