The Wildland Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve and the Greater Sossusvlei Area
The region south and east of Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s most diverse landscapes. Different landforms alternate – from open plains to 6,500-foot mountain ranges, sandy dunes, and canyons with unexpectedly rich vegetation. These immediate transitions create the foundation for a correspondingly diverse wildlife.
The 34,500-acre Wildland Namib Tsaris nature reserve is one of several private conservation areas in this region. Independently of one another, they pursue the same goal: to preserve large-scale habitats and create space for natural development.
Namib Outpost and Desert Homestead Lodge are located in the Wildland Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve.
Desert Homestead Lodge
Desert Homestead Lodge
Desert Homestead Lodge exudes a casual, relaxed ease. The spacious grounds offer various ways to spend the day — whether relaxing in the pool area, enjoying a cool drink in the shade at the desert bar and simply taking in the scenery, or taking advantage of the numerous activity options.
Desert Homestead Lodge is located in a nature reserve covering over 320,000 acres, the “Wildland Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve.” From the lodge, you can see the large red Elim Dune to the north, which is already part of the Sossusvlei National Park, the Nubib Mountains to the south, and the silhouette of the 6,500-foot Tsaris Plateau mountains to the east.
The lodge offers hikes, horseback rides, or half-day nature drives into these areas. Namibia’s world-famous dune sea around Sossusvlei is not far away. A full-day safari into the national park departs from the lodge daily.

Namib Region
Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are among Namibia’s most famous landscapes and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Namib Sand Sea – making them absolute must-sees in the country.
The region is characterized by a sea of red dunes around Sossusvlei. As the distance increases, wide grass and sand plains open up, stretching over large areas and shaping the landscape. Dry riverbeds with camel thorn acacias crisscross these plains, while isolated, sand-swept inselbergs set striking accents. The frame is formed by the Tsaris Mountains, a mountain range up to 6,500 feet high. Despite the extreme conditions, a surprisingly diverse wildlife can be found here, adapted to the conditions of the Namib. At the same time, this region is one of the country’s most sensitive landscapes.
Several large private nature reserves are located in these very landscapes. The Namib Tsaris Nature Reserve, which belongs to Ondili, is one of them.

Ecology
Ecology
Ondili places the highest value on ensuring that the operation of Ondili Lodges results in nature conservation. This commitment is the foundation and driving force of the Ondili Group.
- Since its inception, Ondili has invested its entire annual profit into nature conservation.
- For every guest room in an Ondili lodge, Ondili has created at least 1,000 ha (10 km²) of new nature reserve in Namibia and maintains these reserves.
- At Ondili, electricity and hot water are predominantly generated by our own solar power systems.
- The local population benefits from the creation of jobs in the lodges' nature reserves and in the craft sectors.
- Firewood for the evening campfires is sourced from bush clearing measures necessary for the regeneration of natural areas in Ondili's northern nature reserves.
- Involvement of local farmers in nature conservation concepts
