Etosha Oberland Lodge

Wildland Etosha Nature Reserve

Coming from the direction of Outjo, just a few miles from the southern entrance of Etosha National Park – the well-known Andersson Gate – a private access road branches off to the east. After about four kilometers, you reach the entrance gate of the extensive Wildland Etosha Nature Reserve.

The nature reserve borders Etosha National Park directly for a length of around 20 kilometers. This privileged location allows for nature experiences in one of the most wildlife-rich regions of Namibia.

The landscape reflects the typical character of the southern Etosha region: vast grasslands, mopane tree savannas, and striking limestone formations define the scenery. The environment provides a protected habitat for numerous wild animals. A well-maintained network of paths opens up the nature reserve and allows for guided hikes and game drives in an exclusive atmosphere.

Etosha Oberland Lodge

Etosha Oberland Lodge

The lodge is located in the “Wildland Etosha” nature reserve on a wide plain that feels like a parkland.

A curved wooden walkway leads to the open-plan reception with a lobby and bar. The view sweeps across the large infinity pool into the tree savanna, where animals can often be spotted. Shaded seating islands facing the waterholes invite you to watch the wildlife.

The main building, surrounded by ancient mopane trees, is set in a naturally park-like landscape. Meals are served in the spacious restaurant – with indoor and outdoor seating and views of the two waterholes.

In the evening, after the 5-course dinner, you can relax in the lounge with a nice drink and discover nocturnal animals at the two illuminated waterholes.

Etosha Region

Etosha National Park covers around 22,000 km² in central northern Namibia and is one of the most important protected areas in Southern Africa. The area was declared a national park as early as 1907 and is now one of the most visited natural regions in the country.

More than 100 mammal species, a variety of reptiles, and around 340 bird species are native here. In years with high rainfall, the Etosha Pan fills with water and transforms into a shallow, expansive lake. Large flocks of water birds, including flamingos, then migrate to the region.

The park is named after the Etosha Pan – a bright clay pan of about 5,000 km² that originated from a prehistoric inland lake and now forms the center of the park. “Etosha” means “great white place” in the Ovambo language – an apt description for the vast, shimmering salt surface.

The surrounding landscape is characterized by grasslands, bush vegetation, and open tree savanna. Numerous waterholes provide ideal conditions for wildlife viewing year-round, making the region one of Africa’s most impressive safari areas.

Ecology

Ecology

Ondili places the highest value on ensuring that the operation of Ondili Lodges results in nature conservation. This commitment is the foundation and driving force of the Ondili Group.

  • Since its inception, Ondili has invested its entire annual profit into nature conservation.
  • For every guest room in an Ondili lodge, Ondili has created at least 1,000 ha (10 km²) of new nature reserve in Namibia and maintains these reserves.
  • At Ondili, electricity and hot water are predominantly generated by our own solar power systems.
  • The local population benefits from the creation of jobs in the lodges' nature reserves and in the craft sectors.
  • Firewood for the evening campfires is sourced from bush clearing measures necessary for the regeneration of natural areas in Ondili's northern nature reserves.
  • Involvement of local farmers in nature conservation concepts

What Our Guests Say

Etosha Oberland Lodge exceeded all our expectations! The location is simply perfect – just a few minutes from the Anderson Gate of Etosha National Park and yet in the middle of nature, quiet and secluded. The rooms are beautifully designed, spacious, very clean, and furnished with great attention to detail. We were particularly impressed by the private terrace with a view of the bush – we could watch zebras, kudus, and warthogs there every morning.

Giada M.

Luxurious lodge located directly near the eastern entrance to Etosha National Park with sensationally beautiful rooms and extraordinary views. One of the best lodges on our Namibia trip.

Claudia W.

If you are looking for a lodge at the central southern entrance of Etosha National Park that is not dedicated to mass tourism and offers a high-quality value ratio, you will definitely reach your goal at this lodge. We at Leaflove Safari are happy to recommend this lodge to our discerning guests with a clear conscience.

Albert Voigts

Perfect stay, everything we were able to enjoy was of the best quality. Accommodation very generously sized, which was a relief without restriction after 6 nights of camping with some thunderstorms. The kitchen offered us a culinary delight of the highest quality every evening. The staff was very friendly and highly attentive. Thanks to the whole team. The location to Etosha National Park is very good at about 20 km to Ombika.

Wolfgang Menneke

It was the details. Welcome at the entrance, a fresh tea and a damp, cold towel. Questions about food intolerances. And above all… the fantastic staff! The lodge was stunning. There are many animals to see at the waterhole.
