Hohenstein Lodge

Hohenstein Nature Reserve.

The Wildland Erongo Nature Reserve is located in the Erongo Mountains, amidst a landscape of granite formations, tree savannas, and vast plains. From this landscape rises the Hohenstein, at 2,319 meters, the highest mountain in the Erongo, which defines the character of the entire nature reserve. Its distinctive shape stands out prominently from its surroundings and is visible from afar. The area is also known for its deposits of minerals such as aquamarine and tourmaline, which are closely linked to the geological structure of this region.

The “Frog Cave” in the Wildland Erongo Nature Reserve is also one of the region’s special places: San rock paintings, several thousand years old, offer insights into the lives of early inhabitants and the wildlife of this landscape. Thanks to its well-maintained trails, the area is perfectly suited for hiking.

Hohenstein Lodge

Hohenstein Lodge

Located within the Wildland Erongo Nature Reserve, the lodge sits on a ridge above a dry riverbed, offering views across tree savanna and smaller mountains directly to the Hohenstein cliff face.

From the terrace and pool, animals can often be observed against the impressive backdrop of the Erongo Mountains. Almost every evening at sunset, the mountain provides a spectacle of golden, red, and violet colors.

Even the drive from the entrance gate to the lodge is a panoramic journey. Upon entering the main building, a particularly beautiful view over the savanna to the Hohenstein is revealed. The lodge’s design consciously incorporates inspiration from the landscape: while externally factual, angular, and in earthy tones, the interior surprises with colorful design and glittering crystal lamps in violet, green, and blue, reflecting the Hohenstein itself – a steep brown rock face that is internally full of glittering, colorful semi-precious stones like aquamarines, amethysts, and fluorites.

Below the large viewing terrace, the pool and lounging area invite guests to relax. Small shaded seating areas with beautiful views encourage guests to linger, or they can gather at the pool bar with its triangular counter. Because even from the counter, you’ll want to enjoy the view.

Erongo Region

The Erongo Mountains in central Namibia are of volcanic origin. The rim of a former magma chamber still rises distinctly from the landscape today, enclosing a vast caldera. Characteristic are the bizarrely shaped granite formations that define the region’s appearance.

The area is one of Namibia’s significant natural spaces. Parts of the Erongo are designated as protected areas, including the Erongo Mountain Rhino Sanctuary, which extends over large areas of the caldera and its slopes. The region provides habitat for a diverse wildlife, including endangered species such as the black rhino. Ondili is committed to this landscape by creating further nature reserves. At the foot of the Hohenstein lies an approximately 8,000-hectare area, where Hohenstein Lodge is located and which directly borders the Rhino Sanctuary. Another area, Etemba, extends along the northern flank of the Erongo to the Omaruru River.

For millennia, the Erongo has also been a place of human traces. Historical San rock paintings attest to long-term human settlement and underscore the special significance of this region.

What Our Guests Say

The new lodge opened on May 31, 2025. Great location, everything perfect. Very friendly team who want and can fulfill all wishes. Today we did the “Kudu Trail.” Partially steep, magnificent views. Saw monkeys and springboks, many insects and glittering stones.

Armin Traveller

Super lodge with good service, fabulous views, great food, and truly excellent facilities. The nature drives and hiking opportunities are particularly recommended. We would have loved to stay longer.

Lena Thomas

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was fantastic. The Erongo region is a scenic experience. Our bungalow was brand new with a covered terrace and a luxurious bathroom. The beds were very comfortable. The staff was super nice and always friendly, without seeming artificial. Breakfast and dinner are served on a terrace from which you can overlook a waterhole and enjoy a great view of the mountains.

Ralf Joachimiak

It couldn’t be better. We were the first guests after the new lodge opened. Huge rooms with huge bathrooms and large terraces with mountain views. Very good dinner menu and breakfast buffet with homemade waffles and much more. New pool with a view of the wilderness. Many shaded resting places. Beautiful sundowner drive, marked hiking trails.

Armin G.

Wonderful place! Everyone must visit here. We were completely alone. The food was fantastic and the staff accommodating. The pool was cold, but you had a great view of the mountain panorama and the lodge’s waterhole. We did the Oryx Trail early in the morning and saw giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and springboks. There are no dangerous animals within the lodge. Everything is also very new, as it was renovated in spring 2025.

Ecology

Ecology

Ondili places the highest value on ensuring that the operation of Ondili Lodges results in nature conservation. This commitment is the foundation and driving force of the Ondili Group.

  • Since its inception, Ondili has invested its entire annual profit into nature conservation.
  • For every guest room in an Ondili lodge, Ondili has created at least 1,000 ha (10 km²) of new nature reserve in Namibia and maintains these reserves.
  • At Ondili, electricity and hot water are predominantly generated by our own solar power systems.
  • The local population benefits from the creation of jobs in the lodges' nature reserves and in the craft sectors.
  • Firewood for the evening campfires is sourced from bush clearing measures necessary for the regeneration of natural areas in Ondili's northern nature reserves.
  • Involvement of local farmers in nature conservation concepts
