Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge

The Wildland Kalahari Nature Reserve

Located approximately 190 km south of the capital city Windhoek, the roughly 10,000 ha “Wildland Kalahari” nature reserve combines two characteristic yet distinct landscape types. To the west, a flat bush and shrub savanna predominates. The Kalahari has pushed its sand dunes from the east precisely to this point. The typical red dune chains with valleys covered in camel thorn acacias either begin or end, depending on your perspective, within this nature reserve.

Due to the abrupt transition in landscape and thus vegetation, a diverse food supply of leaves and various grass species is available for wild animals. As a result, a good species diversity can be found in the Ondili Reserve. The wildlife has not been hunted for many years and is therefore not very shy – allowing visitors to get very close to the animals during both walks and game drives.

Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge

Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge

Upon entering the 10,000 ha Wildland Kalahari Nature Reserve, the landscape transforms. Red sand, the first dunes of the Kalahari beginning here, and the characteristic tree savanna form a picturesque African landscape. Often, the first animals can be observed on the way to the lodge. Giraffes, wildebeest, and zebras move through this transition zone between the Hardveld and the Kalahari sand dunes.

The complex is located in a dry lake (vlei), which sometimes fills into a shallow lake during the rainy season. A wooden walkway leads to the main building with a restaurant, bar, and pool deck, situated right in the middle of the vlei. From the main building and the surrounding suites, you can look out over two waterholes in the vlei that regularly attract wildlife.

Superior Suite 2

Superior Suite 2

A thatched passage leads to the secluded area of Superior Suite 2. Several terraces – some shaded, some open – as well as seating and lounging areas and a private pool create various outdoor retreats.

When the otherwise dry riverbed fills, a rare natural spectacle occurs, noticeably transforming the landscape. A permanent waterhole in the immediate vicinity regularly attracts animals, allowing for observations directly from the suite.

Two bedrooms with private bathrooms and a spacious living area offer comfortable space for up to four people.

Kalahari Region

The desert that isn’t really one. The Kalahari is often referred to as a desert – mainly because of its red sand dunes and aridity. In fact, it is a savanna where grasses, shrubs, and acacia trees grow, extending beyond Namibia into Botswana and South Africa.

The gently rolling dunes stretch like waves across the land, changing their colors depending on the light and season – from warm reds to soft oranges and shimmering silver hues. Especially in the early morning and late afternoon, long shadows emerge, making the dune shapes stand out clearly.

Despite its quiet, almost still appearance, the Kalahari is a vibrant ecosystem. Antelopes, giraffes, and numerous smaller animals have adapted to the conditions and can be observed well with a little patience.

Ecology

Ecology

Ondili places the highest value on ensuring that the operation of Ondili Lodges results in nature conservation. This commitment is the foundation and driving force of the Ondili Group.

  • Since its inception, Ondili has invested its entire annual profit into nature conservation.
  • For every guest room in an Ondili lodge, Ondili has created at least 1,000 ha (10 km²) of new nature reserve in Namibia and maintains these reserves.
  • At Ondili, electricity and hot water are predominantly generated by our own solar power systems.
  • The local population benefits from the creation of jobs in the lodges' nature reserves and in the craft sectors.
  • Firewood for the evening campfires is sourced from bush clearing measures necessary for the regeneration of natural areas in Ondili's northern nature reserves.
  • Involvement of local farmers in nature conservation concepts

What Our Guests Say

A great first stop on our Namibia trip; we had the family suite with a pool. Service and food were superb. The view directly onto the waterhole with animals was also remarkable. Since we were only there for one night, in the evening we only had time for the hike to the Red Dunes Sofa, but that was great because there we not only saw our first African sunset but also desert melons.

Christian Grötsch

On our tour of Namibia, this was the lodge we all liked best. The individual bungalows are very clean and lovingly furnished with views of nature and, depending on the location, a waterhole. It’s like living in a wildlife park. All staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We felt very comfortable from the start. The food is delicious. For the evening menu, you have a choice between meat and vegetarian. Depending on your fitness level, there are various circular routes that can be taken through this area. Here, too, there is the possibility of encountering wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, oryx, etc.

Melani K.

The Kalahari Red Dune Lodge offers service at the highest level. Breathtaking rooms, or rather, bungalows. A charming restaurant with a bar, terrace, etc. The cuisine is amazing and certainly Michelin-star worthy. The offered Transkalahari Walk (16km on sand) is strenuous but is rewarded with substantial breaks (breakfast and lunch) and, at the end, separate, secluded bungalows with a pool.

Tobias Broesdorf

Wonderful lodge in the dunes with very beautiful, clean, spacious chalets overlooking a plain where animals gather all day, attracted by food. Very nice bathroom with all amenities. The beds could perhaps be a little softer, but that’s probably a matter of taste. The friendly service is particularly noteworthy, especially by Antonio and Tyrsie, the very attentive waiters, but also by the other staff who are always helpful. A two-night stay is perfect.

Ian Knop

As a first stop, this place welcomed us warmly and with many luxurious amenities, but above all with extremely friendly staff in Namibia. The houses are beautifully designed in a modern African style, open, bright, and earthy. The old-fashioned pool table on the main wooden deck, near an open dining and breakfast area, was fun. You could enjoy a classic Gin Tonic while waiting by the open fireplace for a fantastic dinner under the stars. The waterhole attracted animals without overly interfering with their natural habits.
