Swakopmund Region
Swakopmund is located at the mouth of the Swakop River, which gives the city its name. It is mostly dry and carries water underground. During the rainy season, the water also flows above ground into the Atlantic.
The city is shaped by its history as a colonial town. Some buildings from this era have survived to this day and, in the overall picture of a lively African coastal city, appear like an unusual, almost foreign setting.
Located directly on the Atlantic coast, this is where the desert meets the sea. The cold Benguela Current off the coast ensures an extraordinary abundance of marine life, while on land the seemingly hostile Namib spreads out – yet reveals an amazing variety of life upon closer inspection.
The surrounding area is also diverse: long beaches and boat trips along the coast. At the same time, the dunes around Swakopmund offer space for active experiences – from quad biking to sandboarding on the steep slopes of the Namib.
Activities on your own
The following overview shows interesting activities in the Swakopmund area. These activities must be booked by the guest directly with the respective operator and are not conducted by Ondili.

Ecology
Ecology
Ondili places the highest value on ensuring that the operation of Ondili Lodges results in nature conservation. This commitment is the foundation and driving force of the Ondili Group.
- Since its inception, Ondili has invested its entire annual profit into nature conservation.
- For every guest room in an Ondili lodge, Ondili has created at least 1,000 ha (10 km²) of new nature reserve in Namibia and maintains these reserves.
- At Ondili, electricity and hot water are predominantly generated by our own solar power systems.
- The local population benefits from the creation of jobs in the lodges' nature reserves and in the craft sectors.
- Firewood for the evening campfires is sourced from bush clearing measures necessary for the regeneration of natural areas in Ondili's northern nature reserves.
- Involvement of local farmers in nature conservation concepts
