Teufelskrallen Lodge
Ondili’s Lodges in the Wildland Kalahari Nature Reserve
Approximately 200 km south of the capital city Windhoek, the 10,000 ha Wildland Kalahari Nature Reserve was established. It combines two characteristic but distinct landscape types. In the west of the nature reserve, a flat bush and shrub savanna predominates. The Kalahari has driven its sand dunes from the east precisely to this point. The typical red dune chains with valleys covered in camelthorn acacias begin or end, depending on your perspective, in this nature reserve.
Due to the abrupt change in landscape and thus also in vegetation, a diverse food supply of leaves and various grass species is available for wild animals. As a result, a good species diversity can be found in the nature reserve. The wildlife has not been hunted for many years and is therefore not very shy – you can get very close to the animals during both hikes and game drives.

Teufelskrallen Lodge
Behind a protective wall lies the main lodge building with reception and a restaurant featuring a beautiful garden. Shady seating areas and a refreshing pool create the impression of a green oasis amidst the dusty, dry savanna environment. Breakfast and dinner are served here – in the garden or indoors, depending on the weather.
The lodge’s tents can be reached from here by car after about three kilometers, on the first dune ridge of the Kalahari.

Location of the Tented Houses
The 6 tents of Teufelskrallen Lodge are lined up on a red dune. Deliberately kept simple and rustic, here you experience the Kalahari in its most original form. Even the approach through the desert sand to the dune is a bit physically demanding. But you are rewarded with an almost endless view over the savanna. The largely open and simply designed bathroom is set up as a separate small tower and can only be reached via a wooden bridge.
The tented houses are deliberately designed to be simple and open, allowing the gaze to constantly wander out into the landscape. Wood, fabrics, and natural materials define the appearance and emphasize the lodge’s original character.
The open-plan bathroom is slightly set apart and accessible via a small walkway – an unusual but harmonious solution that further enhances the connection to nature.

Kalahari Region
The desert that isn’t really one. The Kalahari is often referred to as a desert – primarily because of its red sand dunes and dryness. In reality, however, it is a savanna where grasses, shrubs, and acacias grow, extending beyond Namibia into Botswana and South Africa.
The gently rolling dunes stretch across the land like waves, changing their colors depending on the light and season – from warm reds to soft oranges and shimmering silvery hues. Especially in the early morning hours and late afternoon, long shadows emerge, making the shapes of the dunes stand out clearly.
Despite its quiet, almost silent appearance, the Kalahari is a vibrant ecosystem. Antelopes, giraffes, and numerous smaller animals have adapted to the conditions and can be observed well with a little patience.

Ecology
Ecology
Ondili places the highest value on ensuring that the operation of Ondili Lodges results in nature conservation. This commitment is the foundation and driving force of the Ondili Group.
- Since its inception, Ondili has invested its entire annual profit into nature conservation.
- For every guest room in an Ondili lodge, Ondili has created at least 1,000 ha (10 km²) of new nature reserve in Namibia and maintains these reserves.
- At Ondili, electricity and hot water are predominantly generated by our own solar power systems.
- The local population benefits from the creation of jobs in the lodges' nature reserves and in the craft sectors.
- Firewood for the evening campfires is sourced from bush clearing measures necessary for the regeneration of natural areas in Ondili's northern nature reserves.
- Involvement of local farmers in nature conservation concepts
