The gently rolling dunes stretch across the land like waves, changing colors depending on the light and season – from warm reds to soft oranges and shimmering silvery hues. Especially in the early morning hours and late afternoon, long shadows emerge, making the shapes of the dunes stand out clearly.
Despite its quiet, almost silent appearance, the Kalahari is a vibrant ecosystem. Antelopes, giraffes, and numerous smaller animals have adapted to the conditions and can be observed with a little patience.

Ondili Lodges in the Kalahari
The Ondili Nature Reserve was created in a particularly beautiful part of the Kalahari. Both lodges, the Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge and the Teufelskrallen Lodge, are located within this nature reserve. On hikes, safaris, and scenic flights in the area, you can get an impression of the seemingly endless expanse of the Kalahari, with its sand dunes up to 100 feet high and typical wildlife.
Kalahari Red Dunes Lodges
Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge
The Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge is easily accessible from Windhoek and the international airport, making it an ideal first stop on a trip through Namibia.
As you enter the 10,000-hectare Ondili Kalahari Nature Reserve, the landscape transforms. Red sand, the first dunes of the Kalahari beginning here, and the characteristic tree savanna define this picturesque African landscape.
Often, the first animals can be observed on the way to the lodge. Giraffes, wildebeest, and zebras move through this transitional zone between the hardveld and the sand dunes of the Kalahari.
The complex is located in a dry riverbed (vlei) that sometimes fills with a shallow lake during the rainy season. A wooden walkway leads from the riverbank to the main building with a restaurant, bar, and pool deck, situated in the middle of the vlei. From the main building and the surrounding suites, you can overlook two waterholes in the vlei, which regularly attract animals.

Surrounded by a beautiful garden, the main building with reception and restaurant is located behind a protective wall. Shaded seating and lounging areas and a refreshing pool make the property feel like a green oasis amidst the dusty, dry savanna environment.
The lodge’s tents can be reached by car from here after about three kilometers, on the first dune ridge of the Kalahari. Breakfast and dinner are served in the rustic farmhouse restaurant – either in the garden or indoors, depending on the weather.
